Thanks for raising this question -- it gives me reason to reflect. Having accepted this position as a long-term substitute, there were no procedures in place for this upon my arrival, and I always just counted things on my own. Since that time a number of years ago, the number of prescriptions has increased, as well as the number of nursing staff. At our office, we count the medications monthly, and we switch off who does the count. The environment of the office is such that we are always together, though we do not necessarily conduct the count together. I would be interested in anyone's procedure if they are willing to share. Would save me from recreating the wheel.
I have been a nurse a long time and know to count the controlled drugs, e.g. ADHD stimulants, especially when first received by parent/guardian. How are people doing their counts out there? Do you get a 2nd signature or just do it yourself? Please advise.
